I love it when we have science and data to back up what we suspected, or only thought to be true...
This study confirms that smaller dogs are in fact more likely to have toilet training issues that larger dogs. 😆 67% of small dogs were reported as fully house trained, compared to 95% for large dogs! Wow!! 😳
Although they didn't have a definitive answer about why this gap occurs, there was an interesting side note. In the smaller dogs, there was a high correlation between being toilet trained and having had some obedience training.
Some more details, for those interested: Large sample size of 735 dogs, both small (<9kg) and large (>18kg). Fully house trained defined as no accidents in 2 months (exception for medical issues).
Most surprising for me was that 33% of small dog owners seem to accept having toilet accidents and don't work to fix it! 😱 If you're still dealing with toilet training issues, please get in touch! I'm sure I can help you out.
